What is the essence of being a NURSE?
by: Rojan A. Vergara

There are times in my life when I sit down and ponder where my choices will lead me.
Sometimes I get so caught up in my job that I tend to forget my real purpose and the meaning of every little thing I do.
I get frustrated and mentally tired thinking what is the use in being a NURSE.
I constantly seek for the true meaning of my profession and even learned my lessons just to let myself feel and realize my very essence.
But then a weak-looking smile and a cool, steady grip holds my hand directly saying, "Thank you.."
After that eye-to-eye contact and experiencing the sincerity in every vibrations I feel from that hand---my heart feels warmth again.
All the negative aura tend to disappear in an instant and replaced with the thought that I am gifted and given the chance to share my healing hands and caring heart.
Being a nurse is not just merely possessing the basic knowledge of it. It is a pledged profession when one is expected to place others' needs above his need.
Being a NURSE is not an easy task---you act like a single strand of hope lying between life and death; between happiness and sorrow.

FROM ASH to STONE to GEM
by: Rojan A. Vergara

It was indeed a dramatic transformation! From a single blueprint of its floorplan to a majestic, well-built institution that now caters customers, patients and clients not only within SBMA but also from nearby locations.

I can still remember that very moment whenever I pass the road along Kalaklan bridge where I saw a number of carpenters, engineers and bulldozers busy building the framework of BHMC. During that time, you could never imagine that in the middle of those roof-made fences, a six-storey, sturdy structure will stand.

Before, I was a member of those volunteer nurses who aimed and dreamt to be a part of an institution who can harness my abilities and build me in a professional way. That's why I did my best to be at least part of BHMC. I submitted my resume, attended set of interviews, took a number of mind-bursting examinations and the like---luckily, I became a part of the "chosen ones".

Being a pioneer is a great challenge. You really need to start from scratch. There were also times when I already lost my patience waiting for patients to come. I also asked myself once, "Magiging sikat kayang ospital ito? Dadami kaya ang pasyente namin?". I prayed a lot for that one-of-a-kind experience wherein my sweat glands will become so burnout and busy working due to toxic duties---at last, God is so great that He let our near-atrophy muscles work again.

Working in an institution like in a hospital needs a lot of courage, patience, knowledge, and fine attitude. It is not just a single structure where you can meet robots of the same design and chip. But, it is a multifaceted home where a number of professionals and personalities meet to create an environment suitable for holistic growth and development. Misunderstanding and miscommunication are normal however I believe that there are thousand ways to maintain a healthful relationship with your superiors, co-workers and subordinates. Imagine that BHMC is like a single gem (created using gallons of sweat and dozens of time) with many faces and each personnel is like an atom that serves as its building block---a defected atom is like a cancer that has the capability or tendency to become malignant and metastasize. So, if you love where you are and where you belong---be a star that shines! Never let that gem to disintegrate and turn into a worthless loam.

DID YOU KNOW THAT:

One of the most common ornamental plant in a Philippine garden is periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) or locally-known as chichirica. Did you know that this pretty plant gives us two of the very important cancer-fighting medicines: vinblastine and vincristine. Vinblastine is used to increase the chance of surviving childhood leukemia from 10 percent to 95 percent, while the latter is used to treat Hodgkins' disease. Aside from its aesthetic role in our environment,it's good to discover some important roles of this plant.
